Planting the garden

It is now one month past Mother’s Day – the day we typically feel safe planting outdoor gardens. That was not the case this year. The weather this spring has been much more unpredictable. Randy and I have made several trips to the surrounding nurseries to purchase plants in order to be ready for the break in the weather. We started with raspberry bushes along the west end around the beginning of June. Next, we planted haskap berry bushes. I was not familiar with these berries and I really wanted blueberry bushes; however, blueberry bushes are not as suitable to our soil and climate. Therefore, I agreed to try haskap bushes. I am told they are similar to a blueberry but we shall see! Also, we decided to try two cherry bushes. Then, the middle of June rolled around and we decided we better get with the program or we might be way too late to enjoy the fruits of our labors. So, on June 15 we planted all day starting with green beans, several varieties of tomatoes, lettuce, green pepper, carrots, spinach, strawberries, three kinds of squash, cantaloupe, honeydew, and mint (Randy really likes iced tea made from mint leaves). We were exhausted!!! We still have a few herbs and onions to get in the ground but we are quite pleased with our day’s work and are excited to see just “how does our garden grow.”
