John Sanford was drawn to the field of architecture through a very early fascination with construction sites, heavy equipment, and LEGO. John was attracted to High Plains Architects through their commitment to sustainable design and drive to develop healthy urban and rural communities.
Throughout high school and college, John spent summers working on landscape and construction sites honing tangible skills that would later lend insight to the design and building process. To compliment his hands on construction experience, John’s background in art, sketching, and photography has helped him develop strong hand and computer graphic abilities.
John earned a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Design and a Master of Architecture from Montana State University. During his senior year as an undergraduate, he initiated an educational exchange to study at the University of Oregon. This opportunity afforded John an in-depth graduate level study in Urban Design and Sustainability. While in graduate school, sustainability became a primary area of study. His graduate research involved participating in community planning to improve recycling and waste management systems in Bozeman and Helena.
While growing up in Great Falls, Montana, John developed a passion for the outdoors. He enjoys spending his time outside hiking, climbing, and skiing with his large extended family and friends. John is looking forward to connecting with the outdoor community in Billings.
