Kirby began developing his interest in building and design at an early age. Natural light, connection to natural elements, a place to play, eat, sleep, and ease of maintenance were instilled by his first childhood clients, his pets. A three-story ferret apartment, outdoor turtle spa with a floating island, heated chameleon lounge, and gerbil maze to name a few. Limited only by his imagination, access to his father’s tools, and a budget from mowing lawns.
Then Kirby began working in the construction industry while in high school, working in a wood shop building prehung doors for residential and commercial buildings. From there, working in a variety of construction trades to pursue gaining skills of quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. Working in a custom cabinetry shop for years brought enjoyment learning the process of turning architectural concepts into fine cabinetry that transformed interior spaces. Despite his passion for woodworking, it was cut short due to regular exposure to toxic finishes which led to health hazards eventually requiring a change of occupation. This was a wakeup call, to pay more attention to what, where, and how things are made, looking closer at what is so often taken for granted.
It was from that experience he decided to pursue a degree in architecture, earning his Bachelor of Environmental Design and Master of Architecture at Montana State University. Kirby Hancock is now an architect at High Plains Architects. He draws from a wide range of project experience across the Big Sky state. He has worked on a range of residential projects including energy-efficient residential remodels, high-end custom homes, luxury resort condominiums, and neighborhood block development, and commercial project types including restaurants, retail, hospitality, and educational buildings. He strives to integrate sustainable strategies into each project and provide lasting value for people, communities, and the planet. On days out of the office, he enjoys spending time with his significant other and their two dogs exploring the mountains, rivers, and lakes of Montana.
