Architect Eric Schmidt, AIA,  LEED AP BD+C, CPHC® helps to keep High Plains on the cutting edge of high performance design and building science. With a strong background in energy modeling and research, Eric brings valuable experience in innovative design to the firm. Most recently, Eric was deeply involved in the master planning and design of the new One Health Hardin Campus, and Bighorn Clinic.

Committed to taking a critical approach to building design, Eric is a knowledge and thought leader. He has presented regionally, nationally, and internationally on building enclosure design and high performance building case studies. While a graduate student, Eric co-led a research team to investigate the design process, energy performance, and lessons learned from the Stellar Apartments. The team published and presented their findings on the first, affordable, multi-family passive house in the United States.

Inspired by that experience, Eric earned his credentials as a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) and has committed himself to high performance buildings and evidence-based design ever since. The combination of environmentally responsive, sustainable, and socially conscious architecture embodied by High Plains was a perfect match with Eric’s own.

Eric originally found his way to architecture through the fields of anthropology and archaeology, following an intense interest in how people build and the many ways we use our natural resources. After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree at Whitman College, he continued his training at the University of Oregon, where he earned a Master of Architecture degree and a Certificate in Technical Teaching in Architecture.

A native of Washington state, Eric grew up surrounded by its mountains and waters and continues to enjoy exploring the outdoors in Montana. Always the Boy Scout, Eric volunteers his time as a scout leader, leading community grassroots campaigns, and supporting the many organizations that fostered his love of the outdoors, dedication to civic involvement, and passion for learning.

CPHC® is a certification mark of Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) used under license.
